Perspectives on Rightsizing

By Joe And Doug Williams

A longstanding concept for retirement-aged homeowners is the idea of downsizing. The typical narrative is something like the following: A homeowner lives in a large two-storey home for a long stretch of time. The kids move out, the homeowner gets older, and the home becomes more than they need or can manage. They sell the large home and move into something smaller and more manageable.

While this narrative still plays out frequently, we have noticed a shift in how many homeowners are thinking about this transition. Instead of "downsizing," many are "rightsizing" - finding a home that is the right size and configuration for their current lifestyle and needs, which doesn't necessarily mean smaller.

Some homeowners are moving from a large two-storey home to a bungalow or single-storey home that may be a similar square footage but is all on one level. Others are moving into condos with extensive amenities that enhance their lifestyle. Some are relocating to be closer to family, healthcare, or cultural amenities that matter to them in this stage of life.

The key distinction is that rightsizing is about finding the right fit for your current needs, rather than simply finding something smaller. We enjoy helping our clients navigate this important transition, whatever form it takes. If you know someone who is considering a move, we would love to help them explore their options.
